Lex 18, a Beautiful place to celebrate Food, Friendship and Live JazzEXTRAORDINARY LIVE JAZZ Every Night LEX 18 is proud to be part of Asheville’s prohibition era history. Established by John O'Donnell in 1904 as the Eureka Saloon, it was a hang-out of Thomas Wolfe’s father W.O. Wolfe. In Thomas Wolfe's renowned book, Look Homeward Angel, he recounts stories involving the saloon and saloonkeeper John O'Donnell. During Prohibition, from 1907 - 1922 the Eureka Saloon operated as speakeasy serving "milk" according to its historic accounting ledger. The history and stories revolving around Lex 18 have helped revive a craze for classic and nouveau prohibition recipes incorporating Appalachian moonshine, fresh fruits and elixirs. Our fresh and local cuisine is a modern version of Southern Appalachian fine dinner fare served at the fancier restaurants of the 1920's. Jason Heilfurth and Georgia Malki design Lex 18’s craft cocktails. Every Tuesday the bar offers a new cocktail for the wonderful price of $6. Here’s an example of one our favorites: Fitzgerald Fizz 2 oz. Troy & Sons Platinum Moonshine 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice 3/4 oz. local lavender syrup Splash of soda 7 fall raspberries 2 thyme sprigs Muddle raspberries. Combine moonshine, lime juice, lavender syrup, raspberries, splash of soda, and one thyme sprig in mixer and shake well. Strain over crushed ice in a rocks glass and add second thyme sprig for garnish.
50 % off Wine Wednesdays
Asheville’s oldest speakeasy and restaurant the Eureka Saloon, reopened in 2014 as Lex 18. Every Wednesday, Lex 18 celebrates our love of wine by offering 50% off wine. The cultural history of wine and the stories involving 18 North Lexington Avenue’s prestigious reputation are fascinating. Spanish, French and Italian smugglers and bootleggers sold European wines during prohibition through Charleston’s Port and it made it on Model T’s all the way to Asheville. These vintages found themselves on Thunder Road into Asheville’s speakeasy Eureka Saloon (now Lex 18). Today our good friend Jean Philippe Bourgeois provides Lex 18 with small family estate wineries producing organic or sustainably produced wines from around the world. Jean Philippe Bourgeois runs Lef Group, LLC and you can discover more about our small farm, biodynamic and organic wines at Best Euro Wines
